Preserve, Reuse, and Pass Forward Oregon’s Historic Resources to Ensure Livable, Sustainable Communities.
A revitalized HPLO is moving forward with fresh initiatives, expanding our conservation easement program, building new education programs, and advocating at the state and local level. An expanded website will be coming soon – so please stay tuned!

Because Place Matters
Historic preservation seeks to preserve cultural resources such as historic homes and commercial buildings, bridges and monuments, archeological and heritage sites – and the resources, design, craftsmanship, and cultural identity that goes with them.

The HPLO embraces the full spectrum of preservation, from strict, period-authentic restoration, to adaptive reuse of historic buildings. The built environment is one of our most renewable resources, and the rehabilitation and reuse of existing buildings is one key to a healthy environment.

The Goals & Means of the HPLO:
Preserve and pass forward endangered historic sites, properties and districts.
Ensure sufficient economic incentives for historic preservation.
Ensure appropriate land use policies, development guidelines and preservation standards to address the full spectrum of preservation opportunities.
Educate and increase awareness of the value of preservation and its essential role in sustainability.
Advocate at the state and local government level, participate in policy-making.
Provide effective tools for preservation in the form of conservation easements and actionable information.
Maintain a consistent presence in the community.
Include and constructively engage various perspectives from the preservation, development, government, and other sectors.
Provide services statewide by creating partnerships with organizations across Oregon.
